At Least 8 Dead After Shooting in South Africa
In a tragic incident in Lusikisiki, a rural town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, 17 people were killed in two mass shootings that occurred on the same street. The victims included 15 women and two men, with one person critically injured and hospitalized. The shootings took place on Friday night, with the attackers targeting two homes in close proximity. In one house, 12 women and one man were killed, while in the other, three women and one man lost their lives. Four women, one man, and a two-month-old baby survived the attacks. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend those responsible for these heinous killings. The motive behind the shootings remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu expressed confidence in the team deployed to solve the case, stating, “We have full faith and confidence in the team that has been deployed to crack this case and find these criminals. Either they hand themselves over or we will fetch them ourselves.” South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with firearms being the leading cause of deaths. Mass shootings have become increasingly common in recent years, sometimes targeting people in their homes. Authorities have pointed to the large number of illegal, unregistered guns in circulation as a major problem. (bbc.com)
